A bunch of these pages and hub guides have fancy titles, and yet, when we’re left with card games, there’s just too many types of card games to come up with something pithy. Should deckbuilding games fall under this category? (Editor’s note: I said no and moved them to a different Hub page.) Does any game with cards count? It should, but that makes this page way too broad.
Instead, let’s look at a few different types of pages! Here are some options I’d recommend, while you’re here.
Cooperative Games
Not all cooperative games are card games (or vice-versa), but there are a lot of examples of overlap (such as Hanabi, one of the more famous options). I built out a Cooperative Games Hub for you, though, if you want to learn more about great games that you can play as a team!
Drafting Games
Drafting games are usually card games, but again, not always. Here, you’re usually given a lot of something, and then you take one of those things and pass the rest on to your opponent. Lots of great titles here, from the classics like 7 Wonders and Sushi Go! Party, to the newer highlights, like Hadara. Not quite enough for a Hub Page, currently, but I do have a tag page that you can check out.
Ladder-Climbing Games
This is a weirder genre that often gets confused with Trick-Taking Games, since they play pretty similarly. Here, you’re building up sets of cards that you can play to try and progressively out-play other players’ sets. Sometimes they’re groups of the same card, and sometimes they’re runs of consecutively-numbered cards. Some pretty famous games here, like Scout, so they’re working their way into the public eye more even when they’re a bit less common than trick-takers. I have a tag page for them as well. There’s some overlap.
Trick-Taking Games
One of my go-to genres when we talk about card games, trick-taking games are a favorite of mine. It’s a complicated genre that requires you to play tactically and know the ins and outs of some usually-tricky rules, but they’re short, punchy games with a lot to offer. So much so that yes, they got their own Trick-Taking Games Hub.
